Early Signs & Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Early Signs & Symptoms of Breast Cancer

1. A Lump or Thickening in the Breast or Underarm

  • The most common early sign

  • May feel hard, irregular, or different from the rest of the breast tissue

2. Changes in Breast Size or Shape

  • Noticeable swelling or shrinking of one breast

  • Changes in contour or sudden asymmetry

3. Changes in the Skin

  • Skin may look:

    • Dimpled or puckered (like an orange peel – peau d’orange)

    • Red, inflamed, or thickened

    • Warm to the touch

4. Nipple Changes

  • Nipple turning inward (nipple retraction)

  • Pain or itching in the nipple area

  • Changes in appearance or shape

5. Nipple Discharge (Not Breast Milk)

  • Clear, bloody, or unusual discharge

  • Especially if it comes from only one nipple

6. Unexplained Pain

  • Persistent breast or nipple pain that does not go away

7. Swelling in Part or All of the Breast

  • Even without a distinct lump

  • Can be subtle

8. Swelling of the Lymph Nodes

  • Underarm or near collarbone

  • May indicate the cancer has spread even before a breast lump is felt

Important Notes

  • Not all breast changes indicate cancer, but they should never be ignored.

  • Many breast cancers, especially in early stages, cause no pain.

  • Regular self-breast examinations and mammograms help early detection.
